Meet Your Neighbors: Kiawah River Resident Q&A with Natalie Dixon

Summer in the Lowcountry is the ideal season to spend quality time with family, friends and neighbors. Bright sunny days on the water followed by mild balmy evenings around the kitchen table lend themselves to a warm nostalgia made even sweeter when surrounded by loved ones.

As we eagerly await welcoming Kiawah River’s first residents and sharing with them the Sea Islands lifestyle, we’re getting a head start on introducing the first of our community members and their families, creating familiar faces before you arrive home.

We sat down with future resident Natalie Dixon, who shared with us what makes Kiawah River special to her and her family.

Q: How did you first hear about Kiawah River?

We actually drove past the sign on River Road before the community had its main entrance off Bohicket Road and pulled right in. My husband and I just lost a contract on a house and were feeling a bit discouraged. Looking back now, that was a blessing in disguise!

Q: Will Kiawah River be your primary/secondary/tertiary residence?

Kiawah River will be the full-time primary residence for myself, my husband and our 14-year-old twin boys, Alec and Paulsen.

Q: Where is your current primary residence?

We are moving to Kiawah River from our current residence on Kiawah Island.

Q: Tell us about yourself and your husband.

My husband, Donald, grew up in Asheville, N.C., and his family started vacationing in Kiawah back in the 1980s. I am from Savannah, Ga. and have lived on Kiawah Island for four years, but I’ve been visiting the area for many years.

Q: What was your first impression of Kiawah River?

Kiawah River’s natural beauty created by the trees, seagrass and the water takes your breath away. At all times of the day, the sunlight creates a new piece of art on the property. When David Nelson guided our first tour of Kiawah River and showed us first-hand the gorgeous land and picturesque natural environment, it just felt like home.

I thought immediately of a line in my favorite poem, “The Marshes of Glynn,” by Sidney Lanier: “The world lies east: How ample, the marsh and the sea and the sky!”

Q: Why did you choose to purchase property at Kiawah River?

David Nelson’s love for the property and his knowledge of the land made Donald and me feel secure in buying one of the first Kiawah River homesites. Because of David, I will always remember and cherish the day we put down the deposit for our home.

Q: What type(s) of property did you purchase at Kiawah River?

Our family purchased a homesite and will soon begin building our dream home. We couldn’t wait to start our lives at Kiawah River, so we additionally purchased a Waterman Villa in which to reside while our abode is being constructed.

Q: What are you most excited for at Kiawah River?

We are excited to belong to a community that is visionary in designing an environment focused on wellness, farming and a genuine appreciation for Mother Nature.

Q: What do you and your family enjoy doing in your spare time?

We love to cook, travel and fish together!
