Growing Together at Kiawah River: Our Community Garden
Tucked into a small, sunny area near The Goatery at Kiawah River, you can find one of the newest initiatives of the Kiawah River Wildlife Conservancy: our Community Garden. Residents can plant, tend to, and cultivate their own produce from a raised garden bed. These gardens not only beautify the landscape but also serve as a hub for community connection and sustainable living.
Growing Together
Currently, the community garden features two communal, pick-your-own herb beds inviting residents to harvest fresh herbs for their own use. Whether it’s a sprinkle of basil for pasta or a handful of thyme for a roast, our herb boxes are a delicious way to enhance dinner and engage with the earth.
But that’s just the beginning! We’re excited to announce that we are also in the process of planting fruit and citrus trees. These will provide fresh fruit for the entire community to enjoy and add diversity and beauty to our green spaces.
Garden Features
Right now, our garden boasts:
• 8 flower boxes that add a splash of color and attract pollinators
• 2 community-pick herb boxes for convenient herb harvesting
• 8 garden troughs, each measuring 3’ x 6’, where residents can grow their favorite veggies, flowers, herbs, and more
Each vegetable trough is available for a small yearly donation to the Kiawah River Wildlife Conservancy, which allows us to continue to offer similar programs and projects.
This fall, we plan to add six more boxes to accommodate even more gardeners, and expand further in 2025. With many residents on our waiting list, it’s clear that the desire to engage with nature and grow fresh produce is alive and well in our community. With each addition, we’re making our gardens more accessible to everyone in the Kiawah River Community.
Composting for a Greener Future
To support our Community Gardening efforts, we’re utilizing compost from the KR Compost Campus. This enriches our soil and promotes a sustainable cycle of growth, ensuring that our gardens remain healthy and productive.
The enthusiasm for our community gardens is palpable, and we can’t wait to see how they grow and evolve. With more people wanting to get involved and new projects on the horizon, the future of gardening at Kiawah River looks bright. Thank you for being part of our community—let’s continue cultivating beauty and sustainability together!
