Christmas at Kiawah River: Holiday Décor in the Lowcountry

Season’s Greetings from Kiawah River! While we’re making things merrier and brighter here in the Lowcountry, we thought we’d let you in on a few of our favorite holiday tips and tricks to make your seasonal décor even jollier.

1. Get creative with your garland

Leave the pine needles on the Christmas tree and try out some different kinds of greenery for your garland. Magnolia leaves make for the perfect Christmas palette, as their fresh copper and bright green hues will add a classic touch lining your front porch or mantel. Another popular use of magnolia is to layer branches inside an unused fireplace. At Kiawah River, we like incorporating Palmetto fronds into our holiday décor.

2. Bring in the fruit

Don’t worry, we aren’t talking about your grandmother’s fruit cake. Winter is one of the tastiest seasons of the year for some fruits. Oranges, pomegranates and pears are at their ripest stages during this time of year, and better yet, they can make great additions to your centerpieces.

3. Decorate your windows

Whether its simple wreaths tacked outside the windows, or a single candle posted at each windowsill, give all the windows at the front of your home a little TLC to evoke the warmth of home and family during the season.

4. Don’t forget poinsettias

It’s no secret that poinsettias are a must-have at Christmas. The shape of the poinsettia’s leaves is a symbol of the Star of Bethlehem, which led the Wise Men to Jesus. No matter the meaning behind the flower, poinsettias are a beautiful and vibrant addition to any home.

5. Prep your Christmas meal

For many Southerners, a Christmas dinner is just as important as any Thanksgiving feast, so its preparation is not something taken lightly. Some of our favorite “must-have” features on the dinner table include a Yule ham, cranberry sauce, sweet potato casserole, cornbread dressing and a bourbon pecan pie. 6. Make your own wreaths

In the South, outdoor holiday decorations are just as important as the ones inside your home. Christmas wreaths are a timeless and simple way to take your outdoor décor to the next level. From cotton and magnolias to ornaments and ribbons, just about any holiday decoration can be incorporated into your wreath. Whether your style is Christmas classic or modern and contemporary, creativity is highly encouraged.
