Dwell: How to Make Mom the Perfect Lowcountry Bouquet

Any day is instantly sweeter when you stop and smell the flowers. From wild-growing roadside fields to pristine Southern hydrangeas and magnolias, Kiawah River is home to an abundance of flora and fauna, and there is plenty in bloom this month throughout our wildflower meadows, trails and forests.

Bright-colored blooms aren’t the only reason the end of spring is so special. May is also when we celebrate Mother’s Day, which falls on the second Sunday of the month every year. The celebration of motherhood is an opportunity to show love and appreciation for mothers, grandmothers, aunts and the special women in our lives with heartfelt cards, candies and, of course, flowers.

From eclectic arrangements to organic greenery, we curated four Lowcountry bouquets to celebrate moms of all styles.

For the Natural Mom:

With ethereal florals nestled into an abundance of greenery, a nature-inspired bouquet channels the organic and elegant elements of the Lowcountry. For your blooms, use white and ivory flowers, like water lilies, water parsnips and hydrangeas. Weave in different textures for your greenery – like saw palmetto leaves, sweetgrass and moss – for a look that is fresh from the Carolina fields. Your mom will love her organic-inspired arrangement with its just-picked feel. Place your blooms in a Mason jar or tie them together with twine for an added touch of Southern sweetness.

For the Whimsical Mom:

Your mom is fun, creative and unique. So, why not gift her a fanciful bouquet that celebrates all that makes her special? Mix playful wildflowers like purple coneflowers, blanket flowers and blue irises for a floral arrangement that is as enchanting as she is. Complement your blooms with eclectic greenery such as saw palmetto leaves, cattails and spartina grasses for a spectacular bouquet that pays tribute to your local nature’s wonders.

For the Spunky Mom:

If your mom is not afraid to think outside of the box or color outside the lines, make her a floral arrangement as daring as she is. Wildflowers are known for their bold and bright colors, so try incorporating local blooms like tickseed, black-eyed Susan and pickerelweed into your botanical creation. Be playful with your greenery by mixing in saw palmetto and American beautyberry leaves for a captivating bouquet that will celebrate your mom’s wild and spirited character.

For the Heartfelt Mom:

Roses are red, violets are blue, and we have the perfect bouquet for you! Rely on soft, feminine florals with airy pastels for an arrangement as beautiful and gentle as your mom. Mix delicate blooms like magnolias and gardenias with softer wildflowers such as Joe-pye weed and rose mallows for a fresh, yet romantic bouquet. For your greenery, incorporate darker leaves like wax myrtle for a bold touch to your ethereal arrangement.

Moms deserve to be celebrated, and what better way to celebrate this special day than with Mother Nature herself? No matter how you choose to show your appreciation for your mom this Mother’s Day, she will undoubtedly love whatever you give her, especially since it was hand-picked with care.
