A Shared Commitment to the Land

Some of the strongest communities are built through a shared commitment to the land. At Kiawah River, that includes local beekeeper Mark Connelly of Edisto Gold Honey. For the past three years, his 50 hives have become an important part of life here as the first off-site apiary for his business. His bees pollinate Kiawah River farm and the surrounding landscape, supporting the ecosystems that make our community thrive while producing the honey residents have come to know and enjoy.

Earlier this year, a wildfire destroyed much of Connelly’s primary apiary in St. George, SC, giving  the Kiawah River community an opportunity to return the care he had long shown the land.

Residents have come to know Mark not only as the beekeeper behind Kiawah River’s honey, but also as a familiar presence in the community through hive demonstrations, honey tastings, and conversations about the essential role bees play in the landscape. When Mark needed support, the community stepped in. The Goatery quickly organized a GoFundMe campaign, while residents, local businesses, and community partners found meaningful ways to help. Financial contributions provided immediate support, but the outpouring of support extended far beyond donations.

While Mark focused on rebuilding the apiary he had lost, residents began spending time alongside him at the Kiawah River bee yard, gaining a deeper appreciation for the care and stewardship required to maintain healthy hives. Their support continued long after the immediate need had passed. Many still volunteer alongside Mark, tending the bees, strengthening a relationship that has become part of everyday life at Kiawah River.  In caring for the hives, they have found another way to contribute to the landscape they call home and to a shared commitment that continues to grow.

At Kiawah River, stewardship is more than a philosophy. It is reflected in the relationships that shape everyday life and the shared commitment to preserving an extraordinary place. True luxury begins with the land and endures through the people who choose to care for it.
